VISUALS IN (AS) STORYTELLING

OKAY! after a whole night of thinking.
i finally figured out what i want to do,

you see, when you see an object, you would be wondering why it is
placed there, what was there before, what was there after.

lets give a very bad example.
you see our very own Sir stanford Raffles standing there by the
singapore river with his arm crossed,
immediately you would think, what is it about him, why is he placed
there, why is his arm crossed, what is his character like,

HOWEVER, if we were to paint the white (or black) figure of him with
punk clothes, put on a fancy cowboy hat, place a cigar in his hand,
and a ring on his fingers, replace with torn and tattered boots, it
would tell a different story right?

similarly, our SINGAPORE ART MUSEUM, was once painted in graffitti and
it did attract much more visitors for that month. WHY.
and the toilets in paragon a long while back, where every toilet was
10cents per entry but paragon's was 20cents, simply because the story
told in its interior.

so i guess this is where my interest lies, forget about those past
entries!
having the story told via visuals!

(: and this is probably what my research would consist of.

- story telling in general
-visuals playing a part in story telling
-impact of visuals in the storytelling
-visuals symbolism

add on to the list later. (:

Story telling? (FYP research)

hmm. if i were to do my research on
SINGAPORE HISTORY (the way it is told to us)

would it be weird or redundant?

let me give my explanation,
you see, many people regard us as a NANNY STATE, where often the things that we know are media controlled.
i mean history by itself is what other people wanted to be represented as.

so theres many ways singapore tells us it's story (or maybe the lack thereof)
like the way it presents itself, the museums, the events, the hdbs, and the (putting in one leg) influence in other country.

(but my interest dont really lies here)

the other kind of story telling i was more interested in is like Storytelling within singapore,
for example,

our bank notes, the history in it, from the old note till the new notes,
the geitai. (881) the story it wants to tell us, through singing,
the museums definitely, like Labrador park,

now could i do a story based on just the singapore notes?
research into it. how?

or story telling in money in general?
oh no, i'm stuck.

Research subject (lects comment - serving as a reminder)

I noticed one big problem, we are all confusing project proposal and research proposal. The main difference in the FYP is that you are going to work on a research. Which about the study of a topic, ideally this research should be in the academic format, where the research results can be used as reference by other scholars, as a dialog with other scholars. Look at the academic paper format given to you at orientation. After you are done with this research than you can use parts of it as inspiration to your final project.

If you are interested in story telling do a research on story telling, not the contemporary but the old and see what you can come up with that. Again it is too early to decide the story, just focus on storytelling if this is your interest.

FYP subject

i've decided to do on the storybook idea,
turning story into visuals,

and after that simple request
(visualise that my idea is on the north pole and the request stands at
the south)
i spend a week at many different bookstores.

kino, mph, times, borders.
and, nothing much interest me unlike those that's writen by our 'ang
mo' friend.

sometimes i wonder if culture is really that important,
for i relate to english way better than say, CHINESE (china), MALAY
(malaysia) TAMIL (india) and neither can i understand
JAPANESE, VIETMANESE, BURMESE, LAOES, THAI, CAMBODIAN, and all the
language that surrounds me.

and if i were to 'visualise' something out of that,
that would be totally way out of point.

and the thing that shapes me most, the education system in singapore,
is a replica of the angmo educational system.
with just one speech, our dear LKY switched everything from MALAY to
ENGLISH way before i was born.

i can hardly relate to those books writen in the east.
the best that i could think of is SUN WU KONG.
haha

(can't be russel lee what right)
agree?

.

anyway so for a start,
since the project is gonna be dead serious,
i guess i better be dead serious too.

i'm gonna have my starting point, as SINGAPORE.
SINGAPORE history.

i saw this book, that writes about singapore only during the japanese
occupation, its kinda interesting.
but i'm just gonna do SINGAPORE HISTORY, based on those history books,

would that make it kind of interesting?
it bothers me that history always show historical pictures and never
something that someone at a young age would relate it to.
turn it into a game, maybe they could remember their subject better.

(this is influenced by this lorry driver from china i happen to meet,
who told me about how Japan is actually just 500 boys and 500 girls
from china, at the request from one official who disagree with the
emperor during some period of their history, and have this 1000 pple
migrated there.)

.

theres this another book about chinese cultural,
about feet binding and sam sui woman,
what makes a person beautiful is their small feet.
some smaller than our palms.

and the third book is on japanese,
Japanese and geisha

but this topic is way off for me, its just an interest.

.

so the strongest still stands at the singapore.
having SINGAPORE as a starting point.

hows about it?
